Medersa Ben Youssef, in the old medina of Marrakech, is a former Islamic college (madrasa) that was once among the biggest in North Africa. It dates from the 14th century, later expanded under Saadian rule, and has been restored. It’s an architectural and cultural gem – richly decorated, with courtyards, dorms, prayer hall, etc.
Guided tours usually are private (family/friendly groups), last about 3 hours when combined with other sights, or can be shorter if focused only on the madrasa. Languages: English, French, Arabic.
In a guided tour, you’ll be accompanied by a licensed local guide who provides historical, cultural, architectural information that you wouldn’t get just walking around alone. You’ll see ornate details (tiles, woodwork, plaster), get stories about the medersa’s founding and students, the restoration, its role over time. The tour often ties together the physical beauty with social, religious, educational history, and shows connections between various parts of the old city. The contrast between the beauty and craftsmanship inside vs. the bustle of the Medina outside is often emphasized.

Best Time to Visit?
Morning (9:00–11:00) or late afternoon (16:00–17:30) — to enjoy softer light and fewer crowds for photography.
How long does a typical visit last?
About 30–60 minutes for the madrasa itself; guided tours that combine the Madrasa with nearby sites (souks, Bahia Palace, Secret Garden) are typically 2–4 hours.
2. What are the opening hours?
The site is generally open daily from ~09:00 (closing times vary by source between 17:00–19:00). Hours are adjusted during Ramadan. Always check the official site or your tour voucher for exact times on the day you visit.
How much is the entrance fee?
Typical prices: 50 MAD for foreign adults, 20 MAD for Moroccan residents, ~10 MAD for children (rates and concessions may vary). Tickets are often bought at the entrance; some tours include the fee.
Is photography allowed?
.Yes — non-flash photography is generally permitted; be respectful of other visitors and do not photograph people without permission. Flash may be prohibited to protect delicate decorations.
6. Is the site wheelchair accessible?
The madrasa’s historic layout (narrow corridors, steps, dormitories) limits accessibility; many sources say it’s not fully wheelchair-accessible. Check with the official site ahead of your visit for any assistance options.
Can I bring a large backpack or suitcase?
Large luggage and suitcases are usually discouraged for site visits — small backpacks are permitted but may be inspected. If you have large items, arrange storage at your riad/hotel or with your tour provider.
